The inauguration of the arena was by a Gloria Estefan concert. It is home for NBA team Miami Heat that played its first game there in January 2, 2000 against Orlando Magic that ended for the win of Miami Heat 111103.
As part of sponsorship deal relating Arena and American Airlines, a huge aircraft placed on top of Arenas roof containing in the middle an American Airlines logo. In addition, the arena has also magnificent skyboxes named "Flagship Lounges" like those used at certain premium-class lounges at some American airports.
Locally, its often referred to as triple-A by sportscasters, or by some news stations as "A3" (A cubed). The atypical scoreboard created by Artist Christopher Janney is a famous mark of the arena. To avoid Traffic congestion and the expensive and scarce parking, its preferable to use Metrobus in transportation to the arena including Historic Overtown and Government Center stations.
